Organ Donor Waiting Times Could Get Shorter

The waiting line for organ transplantation in Maharashtra could get shorter following the implementation of a new act by the Indian government that will allow all the members of a patient’s family to donate their organs. The Organ Donation Act will remove the stipulation that only children, wife, husband or sibling can donate the organ for a patient.

According to the act now grandparents, uncles or aunts are able to donate their organs while other relatives too can donate it provided that there is no monetary gain for the donor.

Speaking on the implementation of the act, the secretary of Medical Education, Milind Mhaiskar said “The new amendment makes it possible for the second generation, grandparents and grandchildren to donate their kidney which was restricted to the first generation”, adding that the punishment for illegal trading of organs is also more stringent with fines up to Rs 5 lakh.
