According to new review proposes that having a good coping style helps women to deal positively with breast cancer. There is much debate over whether mental attitude makes a difference in the fight against cancer. Researchers in the US have been looking at several studies and they conclude that stress, mental outlook and coping style are all relevant to key biological factors like immune function and hormonal levels.
They found that up to 44 per cent of women experienced anxiety and depression on being diagnosed with breast cancer. And up to ten per cent even had post-traumatic stress disorder. Women who adopt a positive coping style for living with breast cancer do appear to have better immune function compared to those who use a passive coping strategy. The researchers suggest that helping women to adjust emotionally to their diagnosis could be very helpful in helping them deal with symptoms of the disease. It may even help them reduce the risk of recurrence and improve survival times.
