Drug abuse is not a problem among adults alone. In a recent case, an eleven year old child was admitted to the hospital for over-dose of cocaine. This case is not a freak case as in the last five years, 74 children below 17 years have been treated at the same hospital for alcohol and drug abuse. While 56 children received treatment for alcohol abuse, one case involved a 12 -year-old admitted for alcoholism and addiction to painkillers and cannabis.
In the word of substance misuse co-coordinator for Croydon council, Paulin Sullivan, “For some people being in hospital because of drugs is a one-off and it teaches that person something big.”
