Paid-For Sex Rates In Britain Has Increased Two Fold Over The Past 10 Years

Study reveals that over a decade, rates of paid-for sex with women has doubled in Britain

A recent survey done to evaluate the prevalence of paid-sex in Britain projects alarming results showing the rates have indeed doubled over the past decade. The survey was conducted amongst 11,000 British adults between 1990 and 2000.

The study participants were required to provide details regarding their sexual lifestyle and attitude towards sex in general. Additionally, the men were asked if they had a positive history of a paid sex experience.

In 1990, 5.6% of the men said they had paid for sex at some time during their lives, with 2% saying they had done this within the previous five years, and 0.5% within the past year. This has doubled over a period of 10 years. In 2000, almost 9% of men said that they had ever paid for sex, while 4.2% said they had done so within the previous five years, and 1.3% said they had done so over the past year.

Moreover, men who said they had paid for sex within the previous five years were more likely to be aged between 25 and 34, single, were more likely to live in London, and to have had more sexual partners, as revealed by the 2000 survey.

Infact over a one third of them had 10 or more sexual partners during the previous five years. Nearly 50% had new sexual partners while abroad. Furthermore, these partners were more likely to be from countries with higher rates of HIV and sexually transmitted infections than the UK.

Looking into the frequency of the visits to a sexual health clinic, less than 1 in five had a visit to the clinic. Despite the fact that 1 in 10 admitted of having a sexually transmitted infection, only 1 in 7 had been tested for HIV.

Some of the factors believed to be responsible for the observed trend include rising divorce rates, wide spread sex tourism, and the increasing availability of commercial sex services.
