If reports are to be believed, then the "medical condition" on whose basis Paris Hilton was released from jail early, only to be thrown back inside a day later, was not depression, but a sexually transmitted infection.

According to the News of the World paper, the heiress has contracted an STI, and it is such a "severe problem" that Sheriff Lee Baca at the Los Angeles' Century Regional Detention Center decided to remove her from jail and place her under house arrest instead. A pal of the heiress revealed that Paris was not only on anti-depressants, but also on strong medication for her condition, which is leaving her in a lot of pain. "She's on medication for depression and for her condition which is leaving her in a lot of pain," the News of the World quoted the pal, as saying.

And, pals fear that she really is on the brink, for after a furious Judge Sauer decided to make her spend 45-days in the slammer instead of the lesser sentence of 23 days, she had a mini-breakdown in the sitting room.

"Before the cops led her away she was bawling on the sitting room floor, screaming, 'I can't go back there,'" the pal said.

The 26-year old was produced in court after being freed from the prison as jail authorities feared that Hilton was suicidal and heading for a breakdown. The socialite sobbed throughout the one-hour court hearing and tearfully yelled 'It is not right', after Judge Michael Sauer pronounced his sentence.

As she was led from the court, Hilton turned to her mum, Kathy, and cried out 'Mom! Mom' and Mrs Hilton, who was in tears, was comforted by her husband Rick.

The release had triggered protests from jail inmates, who claimed that Hilton is given special treatment because of her affluent background.

"The women inside the jail are seething. They say if you're a rich white girl you get special treatment," the Sun quoted a source, as saying.

"There are girls in here with cancer, TB, and with MRSA. They aren't allowed to go home and are treated by prison medical staff. The prisoners think if you're rich and pretend you're sick you can get away with murder," the source added.

The 'Simple Life' star was on a suicide watch at the Century Regional Detention Facility, after she screamed "I'm going to kill myself" before her court appearance.

Hilton may still get to serve half the jail term if she is in the best of behaviour.

Her lawyers will file an appeal against the sentence next week.
