A hunger strike has begun by patients at Durban's Mahatma Gandhi Hospital. Extreme dissatisfaction of hospital services is the main reason for the strike; patients have also refused to take their medicines.
Lack of proper facilities in the hospital and inadequate staff are some of the problems plaguing the hospital. This has raised the ire of patients who have accused the hospital of ill-treatment.Patients are peeved with undue waiting time for treatment at the hospital. Further, many patients complained that they were discharged without being evaluated by a medical specialist. For some patients, surgery has been pending for more than three months.
Nhlanhla Nkosi, the chief operations officer at the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health, said, “There’s a shortage of other services required in order for the surgeries to take place like the shortage of radiologists and anesthetists in the province and generally in the country."
Patients have categorically said that the strike will continue if their grievances are not addressed.
