We always insist that we should feel healthy to actually live healthy. Doctors in England say that following a coronary bypass surgery; the patient’s attitude helps in an early recovery. To justify this argument the researchers conducted a health survey just before coronary bypass operations and assessed the patient’s own perception of his/her own health status. Following surgery those who had a better perception of their own health status, recovered better the researchers say.
Dr. G. M. Lindsay, of the University of Glasgow, UK, and colleagues recruited patients awaiting elective CABG. Approximately 1 month before surgery, patients were assessed for a variety of risk factors. "Assessment included severity of symptoms, coronary artery disease risk factors, short form 36 (SF-36) questionnaire, and social activities questionnaire," the researchers say. They were later given scores on the basis of their own perception of their health status. Patients were significantly less likely to be relieved of symptoms if they had low SF-36 scores and low social network scores preoperatively, according to Dr. Lindsay and colleagues. "These indices may be helpful in addition to other clinical factors in identifying high-risk patients," they infer. "Interventions to improve levels of health and social support before surgery may improve symptomatic outcome.”
So apart from going to a good doctor it is also important that we have the burning desire to get well and feel confident about our recovery because the patients perception does help in speedy recovery!!!
