People living in Bangalore are at a higher risk of suffering from cardiovascular diseases compared to other cities, a new survey conducted by Saffolalite revealed. The survey analyzed the lipid profiles of more than 60,000 volunteers across the country and found that while the national average was just above 44 percent, the number of people suffering from cardiovascular diseases increased to more than 54 percent among residents in Bangalore.
Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad have the worst lipid profiles in the country while Kolkata had a better lipid profile compared to other cities. The study went on to add that the men between 30 to 39 years of age were at a high risk of suffering from cardiovascular diseases compared to women who were at the highest risk between 50-59 years.
One of the country’s leading cardiologists, Dr S S Ramesh said that the carbohydrate rich diet consumed by South Indians is to be blamed since it increases the risk of diabetes.
“Hypertriglyceridemia is common among diabetics and people who consume high carbohydrate diet. South Indians are predominantly rice eaters and rice primarily contains carbohydrates. Diabetes is also more common among South Indians than those from the North. Because of these two factors, high triglycerides is more common among Bangaloreans”, he added.
