Perceived Benefits of Alcohol for Heart Probably Exaggerated

Researchers from the Otago University in New Zealand have revealed that the perceived benefits of alcohol for heart health are probably exaggerated.

"When viewed through the lens of two major early reviews in the 1980's, the health giving properties of alcohol use becomes increasingly debateable," lead author Prof Doug Sellman of Otago University said.

The study said that the beneficial effects of alcohol for heart have recently been over-emphasized and that is actually not the case most of the time. The researchers also raised doubts about whether the alcohol industry was involved in positive reports from studies.

The details of the study appear in the New Zealand Medical Journal.
