A second outbreak of typhoid has left about 150 people hospitalised in the central Philippines, health officials said Tuesday.

A second outbreak of typhoid has left about 150 people hospitalised in the central Philippines, health officials said Tuesday.

The latest outbreak is on the island of Zumarraga, off the eastern half of Samar island, said Aura Corpuz, medical specialist with the National Epidemiology Centre in Manila.

Epidemiologists suspect the outbreak is due to the lack of sanitation and heavy rains in recent weeks which washed sewerage into open wells residents use for drinking water, said Corpuz.

She said the latest outbreak had not yet reached a dangerous level and there were no fatalities.

Earlier this month, there was an outbreak of typhoid in Calamba City just outside Manila, leaving 1,200 people hospitalised.
