Women, did you know this- All marks to the efforts of a pilot study, which measured the efficacy of medical abortions within the precincts of one’s home or a General Practitioner’s clinic. The study has portrayed successful results, according to report announcements.

The Department of Health has discovered that women who are less than 9 weeks pregnant can have a safe abortion at anyplace other than a hospital setting.

172 women underwent abortions as part of the pilot study, but none experienced any serious complications after consuming the prescribed medication, in a primary care centre. A nurse was deputed to oversee the abortion. Project manager Shirley Butler told the magazine: "This has been a successful pilot and it has proved that abortion is safe outside a hospital. We have had few problems. Some women experienced pain and they were given painkillers. One woman had haemorrhaging, but if she had been at home she would have called our helpline and she would have been given help."

This development could encourage women to have medical abortions in GP surgeries, family planning clinics and in their own homes.
