Pine tree bark can now be used for treating brain injuries.
An antioxidant from the bark of the pine tree, called Enzogenol, can help treat people with traumatic brain injury, according to researchers at the Auckland University of Technology (AUT). Researchers gave this extract to 60 people with a brain injury for 3-months. They found the drug can boost memory and improve attention span. Patients who took the medicine were less likely to forget people's names or basic directions or respond to important correspondence, common problems for brain injury sufferers.
AUT stroke specialist Professor Valery Feigin said, "Other than brain exercises, there are limited treatments available to improve damage." Therefore, the researchers are looking forward to launch a large scale trial based on the success of this pilot study.
