The Labor government in Australia, headed by Prime Minister Julia Gillard is confident on getting legislation through federal parliament on the issue of discounted private health insurance for wealthier Australians. The government’s position is that taxes of working Australians shouldn't be used to subsidize private health insurance of Australia’s rich.
Debate on the controversial measure will continue in the lower house later this week. Labor is close to securing the support of the three crossbench MPs it needs to pass the draft laws.
The government states that this is an incredibly simple fairness proposition. However, its reforms have been defeated twice previously in the Senate.
