The poll conducted in the UK and US revealed that 55 per cent of all social gamers are female, while 45 per cent are male.It was found that the average age of social gamers is 43, with American social gamers averaging 48 years of age compared to 38 for Brit gamers.
Information Solutions carried out the study for PopCap Games.
It was conducted in order to learn more about the new breed of "social gamers" - those playing games on social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace.
Farmville, Texas Hold'em Poker, Mafia Wars and Cafe World emerged as the favourite games.
Fifty-four per cent of social gamers are female and 46 per cent male in the US; in the UK, the figures are 58 per cent and 42 per cent respectively.

Over 24 per cent of almost 5000 respondents to the survey said they regularly played social games, indicating a total social gamer population of approximately 100 million in the US and Britain.

It added: "While still in its infancy compared to the traditional video game industry, the social games sector represents a huge opportunity to reach hundreds of millions of consumers who historically have not played video games."
The survey also showed that women are more likely to play social games with real-world friends or relatives than men, while men play more with strangers than women.
Ninety-five per cent of social gamers play multiple times every week and 64 per cent play at least once a day, with most playing for over half and hour at a stretch.
Facebook is the most popular site for social gamers with 83 per cent of social gamers using the site, compared to 24 per cent who play on MySpace, seven per cent on Bebo and five per cent on Friendster.
