Consuming rolled oats regularly helps reduce “bad” cholesterol and it may even work better than just avoiding saturated fat, reveals a new study. Barley and soybeans also have a similar effect in reducing "bad" LDL cholesterol.
The study also showed that consuming foods like soy, nuts, viscous fibre and plant sterols have a good effect in reducing cholesterol. The study revealed that those who consumed this diet were able to reduce their LDL cholesterol by 20 percent, equivalent to the effect of taking a low dose of statin.
"I get a lot of clients who try to reduce LDL cholesterol by cutting out saturated fat and they can't understand why their levels aren't coming down. But we've had people who've been able to avoid going on cholesterol lowering medication or have reduced their dose after trying the Portfolio diet," researchers said.
