New research from the University of Michigan which studied 6,000 adults above 50 years of age with no history of stroke has revealed the health bonus of being optimistic. Even after considering other risk factors for cardiovascular disease and stroke, like hypertension and BMI, researchers found that optimism in life helped reduce the risk of stroke to a great extent.
Earlier research in this area has also pointed to a connection between cardiovascular disease and stroke among those with aggressive and negative personalities.
Optimism in life can actually work in reducing blood pressure as well as inspire healthy behaviors like proper eating habits and regular exercise. Overall, optimism in life is indeed protective.
