Prayer: Does It Heal?

When someone is afflicted with a disease or has had an accident, it is common to say, I'll Pray for you. But doctors set out to examine whether prayer actually heals.

"Praying for your health is one of the most common complementary treatments people do on their own," said Dr. Harold G. Koenig, co-director of the Center for Spirituality, Theology and Health at Duke University Medical Center. "About 90 percent of Americans pray at some point in their lives, and when they're under stress, such as when they're sick, they're even more likely to pray."

In a survey of more than 2,000 Americans, over one-third said that they prayed when faced with health problems. The study is published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

Many trials have been conducted to assess the impact of prayer on heart health, but the results are inconclusive.
