A conference was held on health and urban design, which was attended by Dr Richard Jackson. At the conference Prince of Wales said that walking or cycling for half an hour a day could have a significant improvement on our state of health.
He asked the authorities to make environment more attractive and appealing to the pedestrian. He also said in his speech that building design affects public well being. He expressed his concern at the rise in people's suffering from allergies in the UK and the emergence of sick-building syndrome.
He said that the younger generation need more place to walk and cycle and asked for the introduction of complementary medicine, to combat obesity in youngsters. In November, he supported healthier, more nutritional, school meals.
Dr Jackson, who is professor at the University of California School of Health, said that obesity and mental illness are due to the poorly designed neighbourhoods.
