The state of mental health has a bearing on how an individual behaves, and this is amply evident in the study conducted by the Justice department, which found that nearly 50 % of the inmates of the prison suffer severe mental ailments - mania, depression and psychotic disorders.
While interviewing more than 25000 inmates, the researchers found that more than 75% of the state inmates suffered substance abuse problems, and 25% of them were physically and sexually abused. The female inmates portrayed the highest rate of mental illness among all, touching 73%.The study also revealed that the prisoners are so angry that all it requires is a small provocation to commit acts of violence that might get them back into prison again.
