Proactive Measures for Diabetes at Edmonton

A diabetes detection programme has been planned in Edmonton’s Capital Health Region.

A diabetes detection programme has been planned in Edmonton’s Capital Health Region. As per this, information on blood sugar level of a person is recorded whenever he or she visits a hospital, clinic or a doctor which is immediately stored in a central database. This information can further be used to detect diabetes and treat the illness if found.

If diabetes is not treated, it could manifest itself as blindness, kidney failure, amputation of limbs etc. Hence at an early stage, management of this disease becomes easy. As high glucose levels are the indicators of this disease, doctors, chemists and nurses could advise such people to adopt an exercise regimen combined with proper diet.

People who are registered with this programme would be educated on diabetes management. These patients would be constantly monitored and kept a tab by their family physicians. If there are no such family doctors, then public health services would take the role of the family doctor.

In Canada it has been estimated that by 2010, the cost of treatment of diabetes would increase to $ 15.6 billion. This could come down drastically if preventive measures like these programmes are followed.
