Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday made a strong pitch to his fellow citizens to protect the environment and preserve wildlife, especially endangered species.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday made a strong pitch to his fellow citizens to protect the environment and preserve wildlife, especially endangered species, as custodians for future generations.

"In protecting our environment let us recall Gandhiji's wise words that nature has given us enough for everyone's need but not for everyone's greed," Manmohan Sngh said in his Independence Day address.

"Every citizen must ensure that our wildlife, especially endangered species like tigers, lions and elephants are preserved for the benefit of future generation," he said.

"Keeping India green and clean must be a national and an individual obsession."

Asking people to also protect glaciers, keep rivers clean and increase forest cover, the prime minister said every person must be aware about how he or she impacts on nature and climate.

"People across the world are increasingly concerned about global warming. And so must we be. We must be economical in our consumption of fuels and energy. This we owe humanity and to posterity."

He said India was a land that first sent the message out that the whole world was one family, or Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, and urged its people to accordingly set an example in finding collective solutions to global problems.
