According to a latest research it has been observed that approximately two thirds of teenage boys and around three quarters of teenage girls in juvenile detention suffer from at least one psychiatric disorder. In a recent study, 2023 juvenile teens were interviewed and evaluated by researchers before they were admitted to a temporary juvenile detention center in Cook County, Ill. Researchers interviewed the juvenile teens in order to track the prevalence of psychiatric disorders among the teens. Researchers found almost half of the teens abused drugs or suffered from drug addiction, and over 45 percent had oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder.
After eliminating factors such as conduct disorders, nearly 55 percent of males and over two-thirds of females suffered from one or more mental or substance abuse disorders. Researchers found more than 20 percent of females and older youth had a major depressive disorder. Teenage boys were found to have higher rates of manic episodes, psychotic disorders, and substance abuse, or addictions, than teenage girls. The authors write, "Youth with psychiatric disorders pose a challenge for the juvenile justice system and, after their release, for the larger mental health system."
