An Australian obesity expert has said that governments are wasting money by conducting public weight loss programs
An Australian obesity expert has said that governments are wasting money by conducting public weight loss programs and added that such programs are not effective since the body of an obese person is programmed to reclaim any lost weight. Writing in The Medical Journal of Australia, Joseph Proietto, who is also a professor of medicine at the University of Melbourne, said that public weight loss programs and awareness programs regarding obesity are not effective since weight loss in obese people changed the hunger-controlling hormones encouraging weight gain.
“It is likely that it is these physiological adaptations that make it so difficult to maintain weight loss. Importantly, in those who are already obese, public health messages encouraging people to eat healthy food and exercise are unlikely to have a long-term impact on their weight”, he said.
