As many as 300 laborers in the state are reported to have lost their kidneys since the year 2001.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called for a report with regard to people allegedly being coerced to sell their kidneys and has issued the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police of the Indian State of Punjab with a notice. As many as 300 laborers in the state are reported to have lost their kidneys since the year 2001, and about 25 of them are no longer alive. The illegal transplants were reportedly permitted a principal of a medical college belonging to the government.
The NHRC has been called upon to intervene in the matter by Jawaid Laiq, a human rights activist, and prominent members of the legal profession like Ram Jethmalani, Ashok Kumar Singh, Kamini Jaiswal and Lataa Krishnamurthy. It has also been alleged that the victims were imprisoned after the ordeal they had to undergo.
