Puppets Spread Health Awareness in Rural Rajasthan

Rajasthan has employed a new spokesperson to spread health awareness in rural areas - puppets.

A health awareness programme launched by Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje last week informs the rural poor on the state's medical, health and family welfare schemes via puppet shows and cultural programmes.

The month-long 'Swasthaya Chetna Yatra' - health awareness journey - is spreading health-related information with the help of local artistes in 'Kala Jathas', while state officials and medical personnel roll out health 'raths', or chariots.

The raths provide details of health-related schemes through puppet shows, films and cultural programmes, Digambar Singh, Rajasthan's medical and health minister, told IANS.

Health camps would also be organised where specialist doctors and free medicines would be available. Complete vaccination of children would also be undertaken, the minister added.

Rajasthan's medical and health secretary R.K. Meena said the campaign would create awareness about nutrition, maternal and child health and AIDS along with providing information about different health schemes.

"The plan is being accepted well in rural areas," Meena added.
