The rape of a woman in Britain three years ago seems to have revealed two strikingly contrasting human traits – nobility and brutality.

The rape of a woman in Britain three years ago seems to have revealed two strikingly contrasting human traits – nobility and brutality.

The rape was described as indescribably brutal, the woman found naked under a truck with a fractured skull, left behind for dead. She is still confined to a wheelchair, more than three years after her ordeal.

On the other hand, the young man who was instrumental in the conviction of the culprit has since donated his reward money of £10,000 towards rehabilitation of the rape victim, newspapers report.

Police released CCTV images of the suspect walking down a street near a group of women shortly before the attack.

Lloyd Gardner, 22, a restaurant manager, recognised two of the women as former colleagues of his, and officers were then able to trace them to their native Poland.

The women too gave crucial evidence which saw Jakub Tomczak, 24, being extradited from Poland to stand trial at Exeter Crown Court.

Tomczak was given for two life sentences for his crime, which police described as one of the most brutal rapes they had ever investigated.

He was working as a hospital night porter when he attacked the woman in Exeter in July 2006.

He is currently serving his term in a Polish prison.

Police have hailed Gardner as an ' outstanding member of the community' who showed 'unbelievable kindness.'

But Gardner said: 'I didn't feel like I'd earned it. The fact that such a horrific thing happened to that lady, I thought it would benefit her life more than it would mine.

'I thought the money would go a lot further to improve her situation.

'I just wanted to help in any way possible and I hope this has done that.'
