Unique text service aid launched by Red Cross has found favor wih thousands of people who keep downloading cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) instructions to their handsets.

Mobile phones may soon come to be used for such downloads as may save their users' lives.

The Red Cross has launched a text service in first aid, which has found favour with thousands of people, who keep downloading cardio pulmonary resuscitation instructions to their handsets.

Within seconds an animated instruction appears on screen, advising on how to deliver CPR.

A diagram tells cell phone users how to clear the airways, start breathing, and compressions. The download costs three dollars.

"At this stage we have just over 5000 downloads. Ultimately we would like to get it on to one in every five phones across the country, which would save so many more lives," the Daily Telegraph quoted a Red Cross spokesman as saying.

The newspaper has been campaigning for all pool owners to learn CPR in collaboration with the Royal Lifesaving Society of Australia.
