New research out of Spain is claiming that eating red meat regularly may harm the quality of sperm in men and hurt their chances of becoming a father. The study by Dr Jaime Mendioloa and colleagues from Instituto Bernabeu and other and academic institutions in Spain found that men with normal sperm had low protein intake.
The study of 61 patients fond that men who had good sperm count ate foods rich in antioxidants, fiber, folate, vitamin C and lycopene. Men with abnormal sperm count ate more protein, which came from animal sources. The researchers wrote that "low intake of antioxidant nutrients, found in fruit and vegetables, was associated with poor semen quality in Spanish men attending fertility clinics."
The details of the study appear in the peer-reviewed medical journal Fertility and Sterility.
