Red Ribbons, Curls and Retro Hairstyles Popular on Valentine's Day

While red ribbons and heart-shaped accessories naturally dominated, the retro Sadhana cut and Dev Anand cowlick made a comeback as crowning glory this Valentine's Day, say hairstyle gurus.

Hair salons registered up to 75 percent increase in clientele during the last week as young romantics spruced up on grooming rituals in preparation for Valentine's Day.

"Since Valentine's Day is a special day, people went for a special hairdo - a crazy and more western one. Straightening is out and waves and curls are in. Youngsters emphasized on volume as it highlights the face. Also, volume creates glamour," celebrity hairstylist Dar told IANS.

The style guru, who has created coiffure for celebrities like Aishwarya Rai, Samantha Fox and Goldie Hawn, confessed that shades of red among hair colors and accessories were a huge hit during the 'love week'.

"Blessed with dark hair, Indians females sported roses, red ribbons, feathers, heart-shaped hair accessories and pearls, which are my favorite. Men went in for long hair and the beach-wet look," added Dar.

"Ribbons, clips, hair-bands, combs and fancy hair accessories became very popular," said Shahnaz Hussain.

Last week, Dar's salon registered approximately 50 percent rise in clientele - out of which the ratio of females is only slightly higher than the males. Similar is the case with the Shahnaz Hussain group and Habibs' Hairstyling and Beauty Salon.

"The young clientele went up by about 50 percent, the way it does during the wedding season. Young people wanted facial treatments, get their hair done and make-up," said Hussian.

"In the last week, I have seen a 75 percent more crowd that includes 50 percent females and 25 percent males. Teenagers saved money for special hairstyles," said Amjad Habib.

In hair trends, he confirmed the comeback of the 60's and 70's hairstyles.

"The Cleopatra finger-wave style, Sadhana cut, Sharmila Tagore and Mumtaz buns are hot this season and a bob-cut for men is in vogue now. Among hair color, violet-red, pink and multicolored hair proved a huge hit."

Hussain, however, asserted the return of curls and the cascading look.

"Girls sported long hair, with a thickly layered cascading look and curls in the lower half of the hair. Long hair tied up in a ponytail with colored ribbons or secured with fancy clips were spotted. For short hair, a tousled look proved great," she said.

Men tried several trends, including straight and crew cuts. Some sported the spiked and gelled look as well, she added.
