Relation Between Heart and Kidney

Data gathered from the National Chronic Kidney Disease Registry shows that the metabolic changes that arise in kidney due to diabetes may affect the heart as well.

Data gathered from the National Chronic Kidney Disease Registry shows that the metabolic changes that arise in kidney due to diabetes may affect the heart as well. The data also shows that 96% of kidney patients develop heart problems as the disease progresses.

Data from the put-patient department of the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) also shows that 75% of kidney patients have heart issues as well.

“When kidneys fail, fluid and toxins increase in the body, thereby affecting the functioning of heart. Experts across the world now see CKD as a major risk factor to chronic artery disease," said Prof Amit Gupta, Head of nephrology department, SGPGIMS.

Therefore evaluating kidney disease is a must in diabetes patients as early detection and prevention of renal problems helps patients.
