Remifemin, herbal drug which was extracted from the Herb Black Cohosh [An Indian herb], was found to be an effective natural Hormone Replacement Therapy [HRT]. Doctors say herb used by American Indians for hundreds of years could provide a new alternative therapy for women going through menopause. As synthetic HRT use is under controversy due to its link to causing breast cancer.
Professor John Eden from Sydney’s Royal Hospital for Women says that the study was done for a period of weeks on 304 patients and the study results was found that Remifemin significantly reduced the frequency and severity of hot flushes, improved mood and vaginal symptoms. “I've been looking for a menopause herb that actually worked for at least the last 15 years and I'm very excited about this because this is the first decent clinical trial that I've seen showing a herbal therapy that works,” Professor Eden says. The drug Remifemin is accepted only after continuous validation on animal and clinical trials by the researchers, has most of the natural herbal remedies are not scientifically tested or proved of effectiveness.
Rhonda Benke says the herbal remedy given her peace of mind after she found lumps in her breast following treatment by Hormone Replacement Therapy. “I was scared all the time, even though I was having mammograms and ultrasounds… because there was a history of breast cancer in the family I thought I might end up with it too,” she says.
Professor Eden advices the patients who are already undertaking HRT to consult their doctor before using natural herbal remedies.
