Removal of Wrong Testicle Leaves Man Infertile

A British hospital mistakenly removed a part of the wrong testicle before correcting the mistake and leaving the patient infertile.

A British hospital mistakenly removed a part of the wrong testicle before correcting the mistake and leaving the patient infertile.

Surgeons from West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds were expected to operate on the patient’s right epididymis, a place where mature sperm is stored, but instead removed the left epididymis before realizing their mistake and removing the correct one.

The hospital admitted the mistake but refused to confirm the identity of the patient or reveal whether he has been compensated for the mistake. The hospital's interim chief operating officer, Nigel Kee said that an investigation was carried out and additional measures have been implemented.

“A thorough investigation into this case was carried out by an independent consultant, who advised us to introduce an additional hospital-wide policy giving clearer instructions on marking and verifying sites prior to surgery. We implemented this recommendation immediately”, Kee added.
