The Ministry of Health has brought out some alarming statistics regarding the HIV and AIDS status among Ontarians, which seems to be on the rise.

Dr. Sheela Basrur, Ontario's chief medical officer, said, "The epidemic is continuing. The number of people who are living with HIV and AIDS has increased in part because of the continuing spread of infection, but also importantly because the mortality rates have been reduced through the introduction of HIV treatments."

The most recent report shows an increase of 41% in the number of AIDS cases since 1999. It was also observed that nearly one-third of those diagnosed with AIDS had succumbed to the disease. The report also established the increasing trend in the number of women coming down with a severe form of the disease.
