Report Says NHS is a Better System Than US Healthcare

The Commonwealth Fund report has said that the NHS in Britain is better that health services in other countries including America. The findings are a result of a poll among more than 1,000 family doctors in 11 countries including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Holland, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden and America.

The NHS was rated highly for inexpensive and readily available healthcare. Many doctors felt the services were improving. "Policies to invest and improve access, quality, and health outcomes have been put in place. Recent studies indicate that the reforms have improved outcomes," the report said.

It added that some 48 per cent of doctors in the United States had issues getting the requisite treatment for their patients, while just 6% in Britain experienced these issues. Furthermore 89% of British doctors offered out of hours services compared to 29% of American doctors.

"This is an important moment for the NHS," said Andy Burnham, the health secretary. "The journey to overhaul the quality of care over the last 10 years has paid off."
