Restaurants Must Display Calorie Counts on Menus
Restaurant diners in the United States will now get to see how much calories they are chomping down after a new regulation by the Obama administration has made it compulsory for restaurants to display the calorie count under each food item in the menu.
The regulation is limited to restaurants that have at least 20 outlets across the country while coffee chains, grocery stores, bakeries and convenience stores have also been directed to display the calorie count.

More than 280,000 establishments are expected to be affected by the new regulation though the new menus are not expected to be in force until the next year. However movie theatres, airplanes, bowling alleys and other businesses whose primary concern is not related to selling food items are exempt from the regulation.

“We've got a huge obesity problem in this country and its due in part to excess calorie consumption outside the home. Consumers generally when you ask them say they would prefer to have that information”, FDA deputy commissioner for foods, Mike Taylor said.
