High risk of diabetes among immigrants from South Asia is a reality according to a recent insight from New York.
Those born from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, India and Bhutan carry an elevated risk of diabetes compared to any ethnic group in New York.

This is mainly due to genetic predisposition, increasing levels of obesity, and  insulin resistance.

Study author Leena Gupta said, “It’s important for South Asians to be screened for diabetes, regardless of their body mass index (BMI)”.
