e-thrombosis is the new e-jargon associated with computers. But it is no term to be happy about, because this term refers to the condition called Deep Vein Thrombosis(DVT), which could affect those individuals whose work or lifestyle demands them to spend long hours in front of a computer. Sitting for a long time without a break could cause blood clots in the unmoving lower limbs, then travel upwards into the lungs with possible fatal consequences. This condition is identical to what has been described as the "economy class syndrome", that, in the past couple of years, had lead to death of few airline passengers who spent 12-16 hours cooped up in the cramped economy class seats of long-haul airlines.

A team of New Zealand-based doctors led by Richard Beasley reported in the February issue of the European Respiratory Journal, the case of a 32-year-old patient developing a life-threatening blood clot because he spent over 12 hours a day seated at his personal computer, rarely standing up in between. The condition started with swelling of the feet, which is common in middle aged persons doing sedentary tasks, and later led to breathing trouble that rendered him unconscious. Doctors saved the patient by administering blood-thinning drugs. Dr. Beasley said that this case was an interesting one as it indicated that DVT is not only associated with the aged as the patient was relatively young. The researchers said that this case was the first of its nature and it attained significance with the dominant role played by computers in modern day living.
