Researchers at the University of California at San Francisco are using a robot that fills prescriptions without any error. So far the robots have dispensed about 350,000 doses of medication with 100% accuracy. Canada's Intelligent Hospital Systems has designed the robot. These robots are designed to streamline and simplify the process of filling prescriptions for the medical center. The robotic pharmacy handles everything from receiving electronic orders, locating the medicine in a secured, sterile environment, dispensing the correct dosage and packaging the medication so that it is ready to be delivered to the patient. Robots are capable of filling drugs faster and better than humans.
The robotic system does not aim at replacing pharmacists altogether, but aims at relieving the pharmacists from the mechanical aspects of dispensing medication so that they can work with physicians to determine the best drug therapy for a patient and to monitor patients to study the clinical response and adverse drug reactions.
