The absence of Carbohydrate Response Element Binding Protein (ChREBP) results in reduction of triglycerides, lowering of resistance to insulin and prevention of normally obese mice from becoming fat. This study on mice was conducted by researchers at the University of Texas, Katsumi Iizuka, Bonnie Miller and Kosaku Uyeda of the UT Southwestern Medical Center, in Dallas.
They discovered the important role played by ChREBP in metabolism and appetite control. Uyeda said, 'These results show the important role ChREBP plays in metabolism and appetite control in mice and, presumably, humans. Ultimately we hope to develop drugs to inactivate and control ChREBP to overcome these two major health problems of obesity and diabetes.'Uyeda added, 'We found that the group (that did not have ChREBP) did not become obese, had lower blood glucose levels than the obese group and were less insulin resistant. We also were very surprised to find that these mice ate much less than the obese mice of the second group.'
