Close to 53 percent of Australians support same-sex marriage. Majority said they see no reason why same sex unions should not be legal, according to tomorrow's Essential Report.
Just 36 per cent of Australians believe the law should remain unchanged to recognise marriage as being between a man and a woman. The remaining 11 per cent are undecided.
The poll follows Federal Parliament's decision to hear calls for all MPs to gauge their constituents on the question ahead of a formal debate on gay marriage.
A number of federal Liberal MPs have privately expressed support for gay marriage, the Australian Greens say.reens sexuality spokeswoman Sarah Hanson-Young said her gay marriage bill would "sit on the tables" until the major parties allowed a conscience vote on gay marriage, reports News.com.au.
But she indicated that many Liberal MPs disagreed with Opposition Leader Tony Abbott's conservative position.
"Some of them have already come forward over the last few weeks and there will be more," she said.
More MPs would come forward but were constrained because of the positions adopted by the major parties, she added.
