Satisfied Sexual Intercourse for Impotent men with Penile Prosthesis

Penile prosthesis offers a better satisfied sexual intercourse for men with erectile dysfunction but minor complications of prosthesis infection occurs in some men.

Irreversible erectile dysfunction (ED) can be cured effective only by penile prosthesis and the study was conducted in 504 ED patients with prosthesis by researchers from St. Peter’s Hospital and Institute of Urology, London and they found that 89% of the study patients were able to have sexual intercourse with penile prosthesis.

Erectile dysfunction or Impotence is the inability to achieve an erection. Erectile dysfunction occurs in 10-15% of males and is mostly caused by psychological factors, stress, performance anxiety and physical factors such as drugs, blood flow abnormalities, nerve impulse abnormalities or hormonal abnormalities.

There are three types of erectile dysfunction implants used, hydraulic pump, prosthesis and interlocking soft plastic blocks. The main disadvantage of the implants is infection of the implants which is mostly treated by antibiotics and in some cases a new implant has to be replaced.

The study found that 408 patients who had penile prosthesis were satisfied with the procedure of which 358 patients were satisfied with the surgical procedure but 121 patients had complications which were mostly due to prosthesis infection, mechanical failure or urinary retention.

The researchers feel implanting a penile prosthesis is effective in erectile dysfunction patients to have a satisfied sexual intercourse but minor complications such as prosthesis infection are the main concerns for penile prosthesis implants.
