According to the recent findings it is said that a new disease is haunting people due to eating meat products. Britain’s food watchdog has requested people to avoid mutton, goat and some sausages. The Food Standards Agency advices caution people about the disease and its similarity to mad cow disease in cattle and classic scrapie, a brain-wasting disease seen in sheep. This has created a lot of confusion in Britain as meat is commonly used in many meat pies, pasties, curries and some ready meals. The agency said that it was introducing new guidance to shoppers regarding safety of meat products.

On the other hand it is difficult for the shoppers to identify mutton products because there is no requirement to label it, except for pre-packed sausages. Hence the agency plans to ask the European Commission for the urgent introduction of new labeling rules that would mean manufacturers would have to identify products containing mutton. According to statistics atypical scrapie is accounts for about 82,000 cases in the national flock. Peter Morris, chief executive of the National Sheep Association, said that the agency advice would trigger a new food scare.
