Dr Hwang claimed that his team of researchers extracted material from cloned human embryos that identically matched the DNA of 11 patients. This led to the belief that patients could be offered individualized treatments using tissue grown from embryonic stem cells to repair damaged organs or treat diseases like Alzheimer's. But all this and his fame were short lived when the Seoul National University panel found that the research was intentionally fabricated. He had received $42.2m from the government $4.35m from private foundations for his research. He is expected to receive a jail term of up to 10 years and an additional three years for the violation of bio-ethics laws.
