Scotland appears to be far from the goal of any reversal of the 'sick man' sobriquet. Now a UN report ranks Scotland very high in cases of drug abuse in all of Europe. The statistics point at rank no 2 for Scotland in the amphetamine drug abuse category and a rank 3 in cocaine and ecstasy abuse. Ostensibly, there has been no progress in Scotland in tackling drug abuse.
As per the drug policy of the government, Cannabis was relegated to a grade C drug. Consequently but not surprisingly, cannabis abuse figures among children rose up. The drug policy has as a result drawn a lot of flak.Tom Wood, chairman of the Scottish Association of Alcohol and Drug Action Teams, said” We have got to get better at education and rehabilitation. The big worry to me is the large number of young people who are drifting into drug abuse, mixed with alcohol, and see it as the norm. This is a ticking bomb.”
Professor Neil McKeganey, director of the Centre for Drug Misuse Research at Glasgow University, said: “We have successfully confined the serious drug abusing group to about 2% of the population, but it is in the interest of drug suppliers and dealers to encourage wider consumption to increase their profits. “It is only by vigorous enforcement activities that we can really hope to limit the actions of those who are determined to promote drug use.”
