Secondhand Smoking Can Be Deadly

According to the new study it was found that secondhand smoking can be deadly. Hence California and Washington laws imposed strict rules on public indoor smoking . Mike Penner who was 58 years old physically fit suffered from heart problems that led to double bypass surgery. Though he was not a smoker he worked in smoky taverns for 37 years. So the doctors asked him to quit the job. In Oregon it was surprising to find that the indoor air pollution levels in bars that allow smoking to be six times higher than in smoke-free bars.

This study was conducted by the American Cancer Society, aided by the Roswell Park Cancer Institute and the Oregon Department of Human Services. The researchers are requesting the government to enact a statewide ban on smoking in indoor public places. Oregon today is under a patchwork of state and local laws. In 2001 the Legislature passed a milquetoast which implemented a statewide ban, of smoking in workplaces except bars, taverns, restaurant lounges, bingo halls, racetracks, tobacco shops and bowling alleys. Statistics show that about 35,000 Oregonians are still exposed to secondhand smoke at work. California, Washington and Ireland have imposed a nationwide ban on smoking in public areas.
