In a recent study Scientists have discovered that the substance that protects an infant's skin in the womb is a natural moisturizer, wound-healer and antiseptic. The greasy, white secretion, called vernix, develops at about 27 weeks of gestation. Babies born early at 32 to 33 weeks are covered with vernix. However those born full-term may have lost vernix. A study at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center says that vernix keeps the skin more hydrated//, less scaly, and at a better pH. A team hopes to produce synthetic version of the substance for nappies, dressings and lotions. Collaborations have also been made with pharmaceutical companies involved in skin care. This could help premature babies born without vernix.
