A recent inspection conducted by The Department of Health and Human Services found some alarming facts.

A recent inspection conducted by The Department of Health and Human Services found some alarming facts.

Nearly 63% of the stores at corners, including supermarkets and service stations sold cigarettes to minors.

Tasmanian retailers have been warned against doing so and if they are caught selling cigarettes to minors, the retailers will need to cough up fines to the tune of $6,000 for a first offence and $12,000 for the second.

The manager of Environmental Health Stuart Heggie found the revelations quite disturbing. He said, “It can be quite significant, apart from the fact that you can be eligible for a fine up to $6,000 for a first offence, the Director of Public Health is looking at an option that he has under the Public Health Act of cancelling tobacco seller licences."
