A study detailing the rampant sexual abuse in NHS mental units is supposed to have bee handed over to the Health Department in UK eight months ago. The report says that more than 100 cases of rape and sexual harassment have occurred in the last 24 months.
The Times newspaper claims that the report also tells about 10 rapes in which three resulted in pregnancy. Health officials maintain that the report is not yet complete and will be published when it is finished. Paul Farmer, chief executive of mental health charity Mind has called for immediate publication. It is reported that National Learning and Reporting System framed the report."People who work inside the mental health sector, and outside the mental health sector, will be extremely shocked that this seems to be taking place," Farmer said. "We are talking about very vulnerable people, who are in in-patient units to receive care and treatment for their mental health problems, being exposed to sexual assaults and rapes. We need a systematic review to find out what the true scale of this is."
He added that the charity had learned that men and women were not being housed in different wards as required by the rules. "Is this the tip of the iceberg or is this the whole iceberg?" he asked.
