The doctors who are treating Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon have declared that his condition is unlikely to improve from its vegetative state. He is also not expected to regain consciousness. Ariel Sharon had suffered a brain hemorrhage, and he is still breathing with the help of a respirator. His condition however is reported to be stable.

The Re'ut Rehabilitation Hospital’s Deputy Director Avraham Lazari is reported to have said that his medical background and his age are not in favor of Ariel Sharon. However, he said people in Sharon's condition do occasionally regain consciousness. Sharon's own doctors have not said anything on the likelihood of his regaining consciousness.

A vegetative patient can breathe on his own, go through regular sleep cycles and may even make occasional involuntary movements such as opening his eyes, but he is not aware of his surroundings and cannot speak or heed instructions.
