At least six people lost an eye each allegedly due to medical neglect after cataract operations in Orissa.

Bhubaneswar: At least six people lost an eye each allegedly due to medical neglect after cataract operations in Orissa. But officials said the patients were to blame because they had not taken adequate precautions.

The district administration had organised a cataract operation camp at the government hospital at Bhabanipatna town, some 600 km from here. Fifteen people were operated upon, all above 60 years.

Six of them, who belong to Boden, Gunduri, Khandapal and Latapala villages, complained to the police that they had lost their operated eye due to negligence of the doctors, a police official said.

The officials however denied the allegation. "The patients were advised by the doctors to stay in the hospital for at least 15 days but they did not listen and left," district medical chief Srinibas Nayak told IANS.

"They later did not take precautions and developed infection in their operated eyes," he said. He admitted that six of the 15 operated persons have lost their vision completely in the operated eyes.
